Dr. Mohamed Amin Futayyeh

Dr. Mohamed Amin Futayyeh

9/30/1930 - 6/12/2012

Dr. Mohamed Amin Futayyeh, "Doc", 81 years of age, passed away on June 12, 2012 in his home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  He was laid to rest at Garden of Mercy Cemetery in Ruston, LA under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.  Dr. Futayyeh was born September 30, 1930 in Deir al-Zor, Syria.  He lived an incredibly full, wonderful and blessed life; not only as an amazingly giving and loving husband, father and grandfather; but also, as a tenured professor at ULM.

He arrived in the United States in the early 1960's, where he received his Master’s Degree from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas; and then received his Ph.D. in Economics and Finance from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma.  Upon completion of his Ph.D., he and his family came to Monroe, Louisiana and he began his 30 plus year teaching career at University of Louisiana at Monroe.

Dr. Futayyeh touched the lives of so many students and colleagues through his teaching years. His heart was filled with the purpose of giving to others first and making sure everyone else was taken care of, before he ever thought of himself.  Many students continued to remain his friend and would often visit him at ULM, even after their graduation, and well into their professional careers.

His greatest love and joy was for his family and any conversation involving politics, history, economics and current affairs.  He was an extremely giving, loving, intelligent and compassionate man.

Dr. Mohamed Amin Futayyeh is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sabah Futayyeh of Monroe, LA; his daughter, Dr. Susan F. Rhynes and her husband, Dr. Keith Rhynes of Baton Rouge, LA; his younger daughter, Summer Futayyeh of Baton Rouge, LA; and his beloved, talented and beautiful two granddaughters, Summer and Erin Rhynes of Baton Rouge, LA.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Dr. Mohamed Amin Futayyeh's memory may be made to: Islamic Center, 7617 Hwy 165 N, Monroe, LA  71203.

If anyone had told me Economics 101 would be a class I would willingly attend multiple times each week, I would suspect them of drug use. It may have been a required class; one that I sighed and girded my loins, marching off to do battle with napping eyelids. But, Doc made it interesting by bringing the subject to our level, then taking us to a higher level. I sincerely liked him, even if the subject was not my major. Thank you.

What sad news. Dr. Futayyeh was a gifted teacher but even more than that, a good and interesting man. I spent many an hour in his office in the Administration building learning perspectives on economics and life. My choice of career was influenced by my exposure to him. I didn't know until now that we shared the same birthdate, just thirty years apart. Yet another way in which our lives shall remain connected. To Mrs. Futayyeh, Susan, Summer and the entire extended family - please accept my deepest condolences over your loss. You and the good doctor are in my thoughts. Tom Fritsche

I wish to convey my sympathy to the family of Dr.Futayyeh. I was a student in several of his economic classes. He was an outstanding professor would always take time to help his students. The knowledge that I gained through his instructions is so valuable to my profession.

Dr. Futayyeh taught my very first Economics course at ULM. He was a wonderful professor and I know he will be missed.
