Betty passed away at her home on March 1, 2010, following a lengthy illness.
Betty lived a life full of family, travel and artistic pursuits. She was a teacher in both the Ouachita Parish School System and the Monroe City School Systems for over 25 years, with the later years spent at Georgia Tucker School. She and her late husband, Jack, were active members of the First Christian Church, where singing in the choir was a particular joy for Betty. She was also a member of Kappa Kappa Iota and the Monroe Art Association.
Betty’s adventurous spirit took her to every continent with the exception of Antarctica, with a special interest in the arts and history of the areas she visited. She used many of her trip photos as subjects for the large body of lovely paintings she completed after retirement. She encountered numerous interesting experiences, which she enjoyed sharing with her classes. She never tired of fondly remembering her former students and celebrated their successes in life.
Betty cherished the time she spent with family and friends, and will be missed.
Betty was preceded in death by Jack, her loving husband of 54 years, and their son, Richard Alan Pope. She is survived by her daughters, Sherry Pope of Monroe, Linda Minehan and her husband Ray of San Francisco, California and Cathie Garcia of Corpus Christi, Texas; grandchildren, Ray, David and Brendan Minehan and Alex and Laura Garcia; brother, Jack Wilson of Glendora, California; nephews, Don Brown and Bill Pope, as well as other nieces and nephews.
Special thanks go to her care givers, Corean Joseph, Debra Robinson and Debra Seay, whose loving care made such a difference in her life. Also, the family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Hospice Compassus for their support.
Memorials in lieu of flowers to be made to the First Christian Church, 3400 Forsythe Ave., Monroe, LA 7120l.
