Funeral services for Edna Betty Pope will be held Saturday, March 6, 2010, at 2:00 PM in Mulhearn Funeral Home Chapel, Sterlington Road, Monroe with Rev. Randy Cook officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service from 12:00 Noon until service time. Interment will be at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Betty passed away at her home on March 1, 2010, following a lengthy illness.

Betty lived a life full of family, travel and artistic pursuits. She was a teacher in both the Ouachita Parish School System and the Monroe City School Systems for over 25 years, with the later years spent at Georgia Tucker School. She and her late husband, Jack, were active members of the First Christian Church, where singing in the choir was a particular joy for Betty. She was also a member of Kappa Kappa Iota and the Monroe Art Association.

Betty’s adventurous spirit took her to every continent with the exception of Antarctica, with a special interest in the arts and history of the areas she visited. She used many of her trip photos as subjects for the large body of lovely paintings she completed after retirement. She encountered numerous interesting experiences, which she enjoyed sharing with her classes. She never tired of fondly remembering her former students and celebrated their successes in life.

Betty cherished the time she spent with family and friends, and will be missed.

Betty was preceded in death by Jack, her loving husband of 54 years, and their son, Richard Alan Pope. She is survived by her daughters, Sherry Pope of Monroe, Linda Minehan and her husband Ray of San Francisco, California and Cathie Garcia of Corpus Christi, Texas; grandchildren, Ray, David and Brendan Minehan and Alex and Laura Garcia; brother, Jack Wilson of Glendora, California; nephews, Don Brown and Bill Pope, as well as other nieces and nephews.

Special thanks go to her care givers, Corean Joseph, Debra Robinson and Debra Seay, whose loving care made such a difference in her life. Also, the family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Hospice Compassus for their support.

Memorials in lieu of flowers to be made to the First Christian Church, 3400 Forsythe Ave., Monroe, LA 7120l.

Mrs. Pope was my sixth grade teacher at Georgia Tucker Elementary. She was truly a "lady" in every sense of the word. She loved her students and we knew she did each and every day. I know that she is smiling and singing in heaven with our Heavenly Father. Blessings...

Mrs. Pope was my fifth grade teacher at Logtown Elementary. Once my mother asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up and I told her I wanted to be just like Mrs. Pope. She was always very special to me. Simply said, I loved her. I saw her several times in later life and she always remembered me. She was a very special woman and I was privileged to have known her.

Mrs. Pope taught my brother and me at Georgia Tucker. She was an exceptional educator. I still remember slide shows from her trips abroad. She was a special influence to many. She will be truly missed.

Relationship:  Sherry Pope, My Best Friend's Mother

Betty Pope was one of the finest people I have ever known. She was my best friend (Sherry's) Mother. But, she was more to me than Sherry's Mom. She was like a mother to me and the impact she (and Mr. Pope)had on my life was invaluable. Mrs. Pope always took time to talk with me and more importantly listen. From Kindergarden through college I spent more time at the Pope's home than my own and I am a better person for the time spent with this wonderful and loving family. I will be forever grateful to Betty Pope, Richard, Sherry, Linda and Cathy for allowing me to be part of their family. I was in awe of Mrs. Pope. She was truly a remarkable person. She was a devoted wife and mother. While raising four children she went back to college and graduated in elementary education and eventually got her Masters. Mrs. Pope was an accomplished seamtress, she played the piano and had a beautiful voice. After retirement she traveled extensively and became a talented artist. Amazing!! But, the thing I remember the most about Mrs. Pope was her smile, She always had a ready smile. I loved Betty Pope and I will never forget her. Sherry, Linda, Cathy I am sorry I cannot be there, but health issues prevent it. God bless and know you all are in my prayers. Love, Charlotte
