Alvin Wilson (Bill) Newkirk went to be with our Lord on Wednesday, January 30, 2008. Services will be held at 10am Saturday, February 2, 2008, at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, Louisiana; interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery. Services will be officiated by Dr. Alan Miller, Reverand of First Baptist Church, Monroe.

Mr. Newkirk was born on January 11, 1925 at his family farm home in Jessieville, Arkansas. He graduated from the Jessieville High School. He attended Arkansas Tech at Russellville and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville where he graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering.

Mr. Newkirk entered the US Navy on December 23, 1943. He attended the University of Texas in the Naval Aviation Cadet Program (V-5); Naval Air Technical Training Command (NATTC) in Norman, Oklahoma; Naval Air Gunnery School, Whidbey Island, Washington. Mr. Newkirk was also stationed at Jacksonville, Florida and Miami Florida. As a member of the bomber squadron during World War II, he was stationed in the Pacific at Hawaii, Iowa Jima, Tinian, and Saipan. Mr. Newkirk was honorably discharged on June 4, 1946.

He was a 53-year member of First Baptist Church, Monroe, Louisiana and served as a lifetime deacon. He enjoyed hunting, camping, attending church, and playing golf.

Mr. Newkirk began working with the Army Corps of Engineers in October 1949 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He was assigned to the Monroe, Louisiana office of the Corps of Engineers in June 1951. He was the Resident Engineer for the construction operation and maintenance of the Ouachita River Navigation System in Arkansas and Louisiana. He retired as Resident Engineer from the Monroe Navigation Field Office on September 28, 1985 with 38 ½ years of service.

Mr. Newkirk was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin Forest and Eula Ward Newkirk; sister, Esther Zeigler, and three brothers, Howard, Jeff, and John Newkirk.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Myrtis Mophett Newkirk; daughter, Debra Newkirk Hazelwood and husband Dwight Hazelwood of Knoxville, Tennessee; son, Al Gordon Newkirk and his wife Kandi Rickel Newkirk of Cullowhee, North Carolina; one granddaughter, Alyson Florence Hazelwood of Knoxville, Tennessee; and brothers, Whitt Newkirk and his wife Edith, and Ward Newkirk and his wife Juanita.

Pallbearers are Johnny Newkirk of Bryant, Arkansas; Ronnie McKnight of Little Rock, Arkansas; Greg Mophett and Stephen Mophett both of Jonesville, Louisiana; Jack Windham of Monroe; Tom Howell of Pace, Florida; Scott Johnson of Monroe, Louisiana; and Rick Lee of Milton, Florida.

Honorary pallbearers are all deacons and their wives who served with Bill at First Baptist Church, Monroe.

Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.

Donations can be made to First Baptist Church, Monroe or the Northeast Louisiana War Veterans Home.
