Clarice Slagle Johns

July 9, 1925 — January 18, 2016

Clarice Slagle Johns passed away peacefully at her home on January 18, 2016. She was 90 years old.Born in Monroe, Louisiana, Clarice was the first child of Elmer Cuthbert Slagle and Anna Wooten Slagle. Graduating from Ouachita Parish High School in 1942, and then Newcomb College in New Orleans in 1946, where she majored in English and minored in history, Clarice was a scholar and leader. It was at Newcomb that she was President of her Senior Class and a member of Chi Omega Sorority. While in college, she met Roy Johns, a student at Tulane: he won Clarices heart. After being commissioned an Ensign in the Navy, he left for the war in the South Pacific. Married on December 28, 1946, Clarice and Roy returned to Monroe, where Roy would begin his practice as an architect. As a young wife and mother, Clarice began to take leadership roles in the community. She served as President of the Junior League and President of the National Society of Colonial Dames in Louisiana. She was also active in the Junior Study Club, Town and Country Garden Club and Chi Omega Alumnae. As a member of the First United Methodist Church, she again invested time and energy in programs for sharing both knowledge and love. She simply lived her faith. In the 60s she worked for the Monroe News Star; in fact, her love of English, her passion for people and her ability to write served her well as Editor of the Women’s Section. In addition, Clarice was the Camp Waldemar representative for 29 years. Clarice will be remembered for her lifelong love of family history, photography and her gracious celebrations with family and friends. Entertaining, both on the bayou or at the dining room table, gave her much pleasure. Her eyes lit up brightly while she unselfishly extended hospitality to others, often by making and sharing mayhaw jelly. 'Cece,' as she was affectionately known by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, left many endearing memories. Above all, Clarice lived her love of family. The Wellspring of Monroe chose the Johns family as an Outstanding Family of the Year in 2006. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Elmer Cuthbert Slagle, Jr. Those left to cherish her memory include her beloved husband of 69 years, Henry LeRoy 'Roy' Johns, Jr. of Monroe; children Susan Johns Peyton of Alexandria; Henry LeRoy 'Hank' Johns, III and wife Sandy of North Little Rock; Anna Johns Parent and husband Jack of The Woodlands, Texas; grandchildren Jonathan Peyton and wife Kellie of Alexandria; Lori Cobb and husband Randy of Bryant, Arkansas; Clay Johns of North Little Rock; Stacie Parent of New York City; Benjamin Parent and wife Meaghan of The Woodlands, Texas; great-grandchildren John Thomas Peyton of Alexandria; Braxton Parent of The Woodlands, Texas; sister Lee Pierson of Monroe; and a host of nieces and nephews.
