Dr. Lawrence Stephen Baum, Sr.

Funeral services for Lawrence S. Baum, Ph.D., 80, of Monroe will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2018, at 11:00 AM, with morning visitation at 10:00 AM, at the First United Methodist Church of Monroe. Dr. Lynn Malone will officiate. Interment will be in Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery immediately following service. Visitation will be Friday, September 14, 2018, from 5:00-7: 00 PM at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.
Larry was born March 3, 1938, in Scranton, Pennsylvania to loving parents, Marc and Eileen Baum, and passed away September 12, 2018. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Eileen and Marc Baum; his first wife, Dorothy Moore Baum; and his grandson, Jon Marc S. Erlemeier.
Larry started college at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa in the fall of 1955. He was accepted into the University of Alabama Medical School in Birmingham in 1958. After his first year of medical school, he decided to go into research and in 1965 he received a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Biology with a major in chemistry and a minor in cellular physiology at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
He served as the Head of The Biology Department at the 'University of Alabama for one year. In 1966, he transferred to the Biology Department at Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe. He taught biology, botany, human anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and cellular physiology. He served as the University Radiation Officer, the Director of the NLU Cancer Research Center and The Director of the North Louisiana Regional Tumor Registry and was recognized as a Distinguished Researcher by the Northeast Louisiana University Alumni Association in 1982.
Larry retired from NLU in 1997 after 31 years of service. During his tenure, he taught many students that went on to be physical and occupational therapists, physicians, dentists, engineers, nurses, commercial pilots, and many other professional graduates.
His community service included service as Chairperson of the American Lung Association of Louisiana and the Louisiana representative to the National Council of the American Lung Association. He was appointed by Governor Edwin Edwards to serve as a member of the Louisiana Cancer and Lung Trust Fund Board of Directors. He served in this position from 1992 to 1997. Larry served three years as the President of the Town and County Homeowners Association and worked closely with the Ouachita Parish Police Jury to improve the health and safety of the Town and Country residents.
He served many years on the Board of Directors of the Monroe Area Guidance Center. The primary goal of this organization is to assist people in the community with mental illness. He also served in several Board member positions of both the local affiliate and the state organization of The National Alliance of Mental Illness. In 2004, he and several others formed the Region VIII Mental Health Community Response Task Force. This Task Force was a group of citizens that were concerned about the interaction of law enforcement officers and people with mental illness.
Larry was very family oriented and loved to plan family reunions. The day after a reunion, he would begin planning the next one. A reunion could be a crawfish boil, Cochon de Lait, deep-fried Cornish hens for Thanksgiving and Christmas or BBQ with deep-fried Cajun sausage and boudin for the LSU, Alabama football game. He always believed "family came first". His hobbies included scuba diving, piloting small aircraft, photography, wood and metal working and attending the grandchildren's recitals, competitions, games, and helping with school projects.
He is survived by the light of his life, his wonderful, loving, and caring wife of 43 years, Diane LaGrange Baum (Dee); three children, Susan Erlemeier, DDS, Steve Baum and wife Jennifer, and Laura Rogers; and seven grandchildren, Michael and Ben Baum, Morgan, Bailey, and Trent Rogers, Julie and Matthew Erlemeier; and his brother Robert Baum and wife Jean.
Pallbearers will be Matthew Erlemeier, Richard Knox, Art LaGrange, Chris Milyard, Brian Rogers, and Ed Sims.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to either The First United Methodist Church of Monroe or The Northeast Delta Crisis Intervention Team.
