Memorial services celebrating the life of Marshall Scott Legan, 77, retired Professor of History and History Department Head at ULM will be held Thursday, May 11 at 2:00 p.m. at Northminster Church in Monroe, LA. The services will be conducted by Rev. Dr. C. Welton Gaddy and Dr. Steve Jolly under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home.

Born February 17, 1940, he passed away at St. Francis Hospital on Saturday, May 6th after a short illness. Visitation with the family is scheduled for Thursday, May 11 from 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Northminster Church. At his request he will be cremated, with his ashes divided between the columbarium at Northminster Church and his home in Mississippi.

A native of Louisville, Mississippi, Scottie was a graduate of Mississippi State University (B.A., M.A.) and the University of Mississippi (Ph. D). He came to ULM in August 1968 and remained on the faculty until his retirement in May, 2007. He served as Head of the History Department for 10 years. In addition to the time spent with the teaching and administrative duties, his specialty in the South and the years of the Civil War led him into additional research and the publishing of several articles on the subject. He also directed several M.A. theses on local history. He held memberships in the Mississippi Historical Society, Louisiana Historical Society, Northeast Louisiana Historical Society and the Southern Historical Society.

Scottie remained active after retirement in several ways: he was always a voracious reader and worked with the Monroe Symphony League Book Room for years until shortly before his death. He was an active member of Northminster Church. His interest in the welfare of animals led to his involvement with ORVAL, the Ouachita River Valley Animal League. Country music was always a passion with Scottie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Legan, parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Howell Henson and brother-in-law, Hal Henson. He is survived by Bobbye Legan, his wife of 56 years, their two children, Lauri Legan Brown and Timothy Scott Legan, and granddaughters Anna Laurin Brown and Laura Ashley Brown, both of Meridian, Mississippi. He is also survived by a sister-in-law and her husband, Tricia and Terry Collier, sister-in-law, Donna Henson, numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, colleagues, friends, and his beloved dog, Prissy.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Northminster Church, 2701 Lamy Lane, Monroe, LA, Monroe Symphony League, 320 N. 4th St., Monroe, LA, ORVAL, 2411 Pargoud Landing, Monroe, LA, or a charity of your choice.
