Sterlington Road, Monroe

Frances Guthrie Talley was born in Monroe, Louisiana on October 23, 1937 to the late James Grayson Guthrie, Sr., President and Director of Central Bank and Frances May Guthrie, respected and loved community leader.
Fran was predeceased by her brother James Grayson Guthrie, Jr. of West Palm Beach, Florida and infant son, William Grayson Talley. She is survived by her daughter, Frances Talley Jones, her husband Donald, and their children Grayson, Thomas and Mary Frances, all of Dallas, Texas, her aunts, Stella May McStravick of Monroe, Catherine May Jenkins of Ruston and many, many cousins.
Fran began playing golf at an early age and was a prodigy of the late Johnny Myers and the Forsythe Park Golf Course.  After graduating from Neville High School in 1955, Fran attended Northeast Louisiana University and was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority.   During her time in Monroe, she taught school in the Monroe Public School system and sold real estate.  In 1964, she married Ray Talley of Ruston and moved to New Orleans where she was a homemaker.  Fran was an accomplished bridge player and excellent golfer winning many tournaments including the Louisiana Women’s State Amateur, the New Orleans City Championship and Metairie Country Club Championship.
She loved fishing, reading, and crossword puzzles. After divorcing, she enjoyed volunteering for the New Orleans Museum of Art and substitute teaching at Isidore Newman School.  Fran recently returned to live in Monroe due to her declining health and to be closer to her mother.  She suffered a fall and died as a result thereof on August 28.  She was much loved by her grandchildren, family and friends and will be greatly missed.
Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 followed by a memorial service at 2:00 PM, both at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. A private internment service will be held for the family prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America.
