George Allen Davis

Funeral service for Mr. George Allen Davis, 90, of Monroe, LA, will be held at 11:00AM Wednesday, August 31, 2022, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Rd. Monroe with Rev. Lanny Turner officiating. Interment will follow in Mulhearn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 10:00AM until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Davis was born on December 7, 1931, in Florien, LA to Benjamin Franklin Davis and Charlotte Geoghagan Davis. He passed away on August 28, 2022, in Monroe, LA. A graduate of Florien High School, he was a member of Florien’s first basketball state championship team in 1950. He attended Northwestern State University on a basketball scholarship, earning a BS in education and a Master’s Degree in Health and Physical Education. At NSU he met his future wife of 69 years, Barbara Herron Davis, as well as many life long friends. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, honorably discharged with a rank of captain in 1957. Mr. Davis was a member of Parkview Baptist Church for 65 years. During his years with Monroe City Schools he taught Civics at Neville High School and coached basketball and track. One of his favorite accomplishments was coaching the 1962 State Championship boys track team at Neville, the school’s only championship in track and field. He was principal at Jefferson Junior High School and served as the Director of Federal Programs for Monroe City Schools. Mr. Davis was instrumental in bringing Kindergarten back into the school system and adding the Pre K 4 program. He retired after more than 40 years of service to Louisiana public schools. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, who loved all the men in the numerous hunting clubs to which he belonged over the years. His favorite trip was the annual “Big Star Fishing Tournament” held at Toledo Bend since 1976 and hosted at his camp beginning in 1998.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Herron Davis; children, Dr. G. Michael Davis (Annette), Belinda Davis Jones (Steve), Dr. Paul C. Davis (Dr. Julie Davis), and Dr. John A. Davis (Dr. Kristi Davis); nine grandchildren, Jennifer Davis Hluchy (Nick), Lauren Davis Paxton (Matt), Marion Charlotte Davis, Sam Jones (Dr. Emily Jones), Megan Davis Pierce (Larry), Dr. Melissa Davis Pettis (Dr. Zach Pettis), Rebecca Davis Tobey (Cameron), Grant Taylor Davis, and Garrett Allen Davis; and eight great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law, Sam Jones, Grant Davis, Garrett Davis, Larry Pierce, Nick Hluchy, Matt Paxton, Cameron Tobey, and Dr. Zack Pettis. Honorary pallbearer will be Ron McNabb.
Memorials may be made to Parkview Baptist Church or to the Shriners Hospital in Shreveport, LA.
