Herman Meyer McGuire II

A memorial service celebrating the life of Herman Meyer McGuire, II, will be held at 4:00 P.M., Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at Traveler’s Rest Farm, 100 Brimberry Road, Calhoun, LA.
Herman was born on March 2, 1950, in Monroe, LA, to James and Willie McGuire of Traveler’s Rest Farm, West Monroe. He passed away May 1, 2018, at his residence, Traveler’s Rest Farm in Calhoun.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandmother, Mrs. Kate Flannigan McGuire; his younger brother, Jim McGuire; brother-in-law, Hook Robinson; his beloved dog, Harley, an Aussie who was his sidekick when he clowned; and Paleface, his trick riding horse.
Survivors include his sisters, Charlotte Ann Robinson of West Monroe, and Mary Katherine Davis and husband Mike of Greenville, South Carolina; numerous nieces and nephews; and his closest friend, Hank Hamilton.
Herman was riding ponies before he could walk. His love for them manifested early and grew only deeper throughout his life. He was participating in rodeos as a child, where he clowned and competed. His real love was trick riding. He made horsemanship his life’s work. Herman served as Director of Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede, where he choreographed the shows, trained the riders and was featured as the Southern General. He spent many hours perfecting the trick riding stunts and techniques of which the show is famous for. During the past 20 years, Herman has been at home in Calhoun offering lessons in Western riding, trick riding, hosting Western Birthday Parties, and running a summer camp for children who love horses as much as he did. Harley and Paleface were his constant companions and retired with Herman to his beloved Traveler’s Rest Farm.
If you knew Herman, you will never forget his big smile. He was always wearing his cowboy hat, boots and his prized golden belt buckle. He was a man who loved his animals and the children who came his way. Our world has grown dimmer because he is no longer here with us, but Herman will always shine brightly in the hearts of those who loved him. He is reunited with those who have gone before him, including his buddies, Hook and Buckshot. Those three are having a good old time at the Big Rodeo in the sky….Herman, we love you; now entertain the angels, Cowboy!
