James Adams Truly, M.D.

Memorial Services for James Adams Truly, M.D., 86, of Vestavia Hills, AL, formerly of West Monroe, LA, will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, February 9, 2019, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe, LA, with Rev. Jon Tellifero officiating. Private family burial will be at Hasley Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. until the time of the service on Saturday.

James Adams Truly, M.D. was born October 28, 1932, in Shreveport, LA and died February 2, 2019, in Vestavia Hills, AL. Dr. Truly was a graduate of Byrd High School in Shreveport, LA. He received his pre-medical training at Louisiana Tech University and his M.D. degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine, New Orleans in 1957. He interned at Sacramento General Hospital and then served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corp. in Germany.

He completed his residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Confederate Memorial Medical Center, Shreveport, LA, where he served as Chief Resident. He entered private practice in West Monroe, LA and retired in 1993. Following his retirement from private practice, he was Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology for LSU Health Sciences, Shreveport, doing clinical teaching to resident physicians at E.A. Conway Hospital in Monroe, LA.

During his career he served as Chief of Staff at Glenwood Regional Medical Center, received the 1995 Excellence in Teaching Award presented by the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics Medical Education for outstanding contributions; and was awarded the 1998 and 2001 National Faculty Award presented by the Council on Resident Education of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Truly was Board Certified and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and a member of the Louisiana State and Ouachita Parish Medical Societies.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret McLean Truly; his son, James Adams Truly, Jr.; his parents, Harry Lydmore Truly and Leora Adams Truly of Shreveport, LA; his brother, Harry L. Truly, Jr., M.D.; and Harry’s wife Jenny of Tampa, FL; his beloved Aunt Mattie Adams Bryant of Shreveport, LA; and grandchild by marriage, Crystalyn Henson.

Survivors include daughters, Karen Truly Long (Randall) of Vestavia Hills, AL, and Rebecca Truly Stuart (Thomas) of Birmingham, AL; his daughter-in-law, Susan E. Truly of Hammond, LA; grandchildren, Randall McLean Long, Rebecca Long Anderson (Kevin), and James Adam Sydnor; grandchildren and great grandchildren by marriage, Lance and Lauren Drouet, Lori Lofquist (Jeff), Brad and Haley Lofquist. He is survived by numerous beloved cousins, nieces and nephews as well.
