James J. Caraway

A memorial service for the Reverend Dr. James Julius (Jimmie) Caraway, a resident of Monroe, will be held Monday, April 11, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church with the Reverend Fred Wideman officiating and visitation following. Dr. Caraway was born January 8, 1926, in Winnfield, Louisiana, and died Friday, April 8, 2016. Dr. Caraway was a retired United Methodist minister having served actively for 44 years, the last 12 in the Conference Office in Baton Rouge as Executive Director of Administration/Treasurer of the 600 United Methodist churches of Louisiana. Prior to that he was a pastor of United Methodist churches throughout the state and was also District Superintendent of the Monroe and Hammond Districts. He was one of the four incorporators of the United Methodist Foundation of Louisiana and served as President for 10 years. He was on the founding Board of Directors and Treasurer of the national United Methodist Church Foundation. During his active ministry and following his retirement in 1991 he served on many boards, agencies and institutions of the United Methodist church on the state, regional and national levels, as well as holding offices in civic organizations. Dr. Caraway was recognized in Who’s Who in Religion and Who’s Who in Methodism for his service in national leadership positions in the financial area of the church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, with duty in the South Pacific during World War II.He is survived by his wife, Carol Zimmerman Caraway, three daughters and sons-in-law, Linn and Stephen Zink, Fort Collins, CO; Jan and Richard Humphries, Lafayette; and Ann and Fred Wideman, Baton Rouge; two sons and daughters-in-law, Judge Jay and Sandra Caraway, Bossier City; and Ray M. and Mary Caraway, Fort Collins, CO; two step-daughters and husbands, Lisa and Sloan Thomas, Lake Wylie, SC; and Grace and Wayne Holloway, West Monroe; 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a brother, the Reverend Dr. Stone W. Caraway, Monroe. He is preceded in death by his first wife Mary Linn Miller Caraway; parents the Reverend and Mrs. Porter M. Caraway, Sr.; sisters Mantha Rose King and LuNell White; brother Porter M. Caraway, Jr., and granddaughter Maria Patricia Caraway.
