Graveside Services for Mrs. June Spurgeon Jones, 84, will be 11:00 AM Saturday, February 21, 2009 at Serenity Gardens Cemetery, West Monroe with Fr. Frank Coens officiating.

Mrs. Jones passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at Landmark Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of West Monroe, LA. She was born in Sydney, Australia in 1924. She was a World War II war bride who became an American citizen while working as a swimming instructor for YWCA. After moving to Monroe, she worked for what was then Northeast Louisiana State University as secretary for both Dean of Men and Dean of Women and later was the office manager of Dr. Felix Wiley where she retired from that position. June enjoyed quilting and swimming and was involved in PEO and the quilting club. She attended St. Matthews Catholic Church. June was preceded in death by her Australian parents and two sisters; as well as husbands, Charles H. Spurgeon Jr. and Orin C. Jones.

Survivors include a sister, Margaret Driscoll of Australia; a daughter, Anne Sanders and husband Jerry of West Monroe; a son, John Spurgeon and wife Debra of Bella Vista, AR; and seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, February 20, 2009 at Mulhearn Funeral Home, West Monroe.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Landmark staff and Hospice Care of Louisiana.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Ronald McDonald House.
