MICHAEL LIONEL HOWELL SR MEMORIAL SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE
A memorial service for Michael Lionel Howell Sr, 73 of Monroe, LA will be held Friday, August 5, 2016 at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, 2308 Sterlington Road, Monroe, LA with Rev. James B. Johnson officiating.Mr. Howell died Monday, August 1, 2016 at his residence after experiencing multiple health issues. Michael was born in West Monroe, LA on July 5, 1943. He spent his early years in the Bryants Addition neighborhood in south Monroe where he was baptized in his family church, New Light Baptist Church. He was a proud graduate of Carroll High School where he excelled academically as well as athletically. He received an athletic scholarship to attend Grambling State University where he blossomed under the tutelage of the renowned, Eddie G. Robinson and graduated with a degree in Physical Education. He went on to play professional football after having been drafted by the Cleveland Browns where he was a stand-out Safety. He enjoyed a stellar career with the Browns for seven seasons and ended his career with the record-setting, undefeated Miami Dolphin 1972 team.Mr. Howell was preceded in death by his parents, William Howell and Louise Calhoun-Howell; a sister, Ji Loradine Caddell; a sister-in-law, Sarah N. Howell; and a brother-in-law, Webster Brooks Jr.Survivors include: wife, Jacqueline L. Howell; daughters, Michelle Howell, Kesha Garr; sons: Paul Petitt, Michael Howell, Jr., Mark Lane Howell, Macharia Howell (Veronica); numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers: A. Lane Howell, Delles R. Howell (Shelia), Andre Howell; sisters: Lois J. Brooks, Mary Howell and Sandra Howell and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.The family will receive friends immediately following the service at New Light Baptist Church Family Life Center, 1623 S. 4th Street, Monroe, LA.The family wishes to express gratitude to United Home Health and all medical personnel involved in his care including, Dr. Alfredo Torres, Dr. Mark Dollar, Dr. K.C. Wade and Dr. Michael Archie.
