Mickel SolomonFuneral Services for Mr. Mickel Solomon, 94, of West Monroe, LA will be held at 2:00 P.M, Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at First Baptist Church in Monroe, LA with Dr. Alan Miller and Rev. Andy Myrick officiating. Interment will follow in the Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, West Monroe, LA.Mr. Solomon was born on September 26, 1921in Franklin Parish, LA to the union of Davis and Julia Solomon and passed away surrounded by his family on December 11, 2015 at the Northeast Louisiana War Veterans Home in Monroe, LA. Mr. Solomon served as a Radio Operator in the United States Navy during WWII, serving in the Pacific Fleet. He was on one of the first vessels to sail into Nagasaki, Japan after the dropping of the Atomic Bomb. Mr. Solomon was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Monroe. He worked as a salesman for H. Mickel Dry Goods for 36 years, traveling Northeast Louisiana, charming his customers with a warm smile and a kind word. He loved his work, but above all he loved people. Mr. Solomon enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. Every summer he had a wonderful garden and every fall he looked forward to working in his yard and feeding his birds. Mr. Solomon was a dedicated Saints and LSU fan. He is preceded in death by his parents, Davis and Julia Solomon; step-mother, Annie Solomon; brothers, Abe and Albert Solomon; sisters, Annie Sinclair and Julia Nelson.Survivors include his beloved wife of 67 years, Lillie Voncille Solomon; his devoted daughters and son-in-law, Karen Solomon and Mickie Solomon Smith and husband, Barry Austin Smith; and brother, Joe Solomon and wife, Irene; and a host of nieces and nephews who affectionately referred to him as “Uncle Mike”.Pallbearers will be Barry Austin Smith, Eddie Ward, Garry Ward, Arden Smith, Mike Hartt, and Charles Lawrence.Visitation will be held from 1:00 P.M. until Service Time on Tuesday at First Baptist Church.Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Monroe, to the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home or to the Alzheimer’s Association.The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the nurses, staff and aides at the Northeast Louisiana War Veterans Home, especially Carolyn, Roger, Tammy, JoAnn, Nicole and the many others for the care of our father during his stay there. Also to the staff of Premier Hospice, especially Tina, Ella, and Rev. Andy Myrick and the many others who gave unselfishly to Mr. Solomon.Mickel Solomon was a devoted husband, loving father, and proud veteran. He dedicated his life to God, family and country.
