Funeral Services for Mrs. Peggy Price Ford, 92, of West Monroe, LA will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, April 26, 2010 at First Presbyterian Church in Monroe, LA with Dr. Allison Moody officiating. Interment will follow in the Hasley Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home West Monroe, LA.

Mrs. Ford died on April 23, 2010 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease and complications brought on by her illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, John L. Price and Emma Cade Price; her brother, James Price; her sister, Nina P. Giddens and her husband of 64 years, Percy A. Ford, Sr.

Mrs. Ford is survived by her two children, Percy A. Ford Jr. and daughter-in-law, Sandy of West Monroe, LA and Greta Ford Eppinette and son-in-law, Kenneth of McKinney, TX; grandchildren, Ashley Ford Perkins and husband, Shane, Allison Ford, Michelle Eppinette Easton and husband, Keith, Shanda Eppinette, and Stephen Eppinette and wife, Amy; great grandsons, Cade Easton, Hayden Eppinette, and Luke Thomas Perkins; great granddaughter, Lauren Eppinette. She is also survived by her sister, Helon Rutledge of West Monroe, LA; sisters-in-law, Gean Ford of Shreveport, LA and Dot Price of Murfreesboro, TN; and a host of friends and other relatives.

Mrs. Ford was born in Jackson Parish on May 17, 1917. She graduated from Ouachita Parish High School in 1934 and attended what was then Northeast Louisiana Junior College for two years and then graduated from Louisiana Tech University in 1938 with a degree in Education. Her first teaching assignment came at Fisk Union Consolidated Rural Elementary School in West Carroll Parish. She taught there for four years. During that time she met and married her husband Percy.

When WWII came, she taught in California for a year and at Eureka School for a year. She raised her children for several years and then began again at what ultimately became a long distinguished love affair with her life’s work, teaching young children. Her classroom was a model for learning at Claiborne Elementary School in West Monroe, LA for another 25 years. During this time she obtained her Master’s Degree from Mississippi College and her plus thirty hours. Her students became doctors, lawyers, accountants, nurses, teachers, and most importantly good citizens.

She opened a pre-school learning center after her retirement from public school teaching. She taught another 20 years at this school in West Monroe. By this time, she was teaching third generation children who were on waiting lists to attend her school. Altogether, Mrs. Ford taught for 51 years and was thought by many to have been the finest preschool and elementary school teacher who ever taught in Ouachita Parish. In 1999 she was the recipient of the A. O. Evans Award and the first educator to be given this most prestigious award for service to her community. It was the crowning achievement to a life of accomplishment and love.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Rutledge, John Rutledge, Sr., Ricky Gonzales, Harry Liner, Bobby Lawrence, Jr. and Steve Hall.

Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Sunday, April 25, 2010 at Mulhearn Funeral Home West Monroe, LA

Memorials may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association, The First Presbyterian Church of Monroe, LA or to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
