Funeral services for Mr. Thomas Max Griffith will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, September 3, 2009 at Mulhearn Memorial Park Mausoleum at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery with Chaplain Milton Pray officiating.
Thomas Max Griffith, 93, died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family. He fought a courageous battle with cancer and was an inspiration to everyone he met.
Mr. Tom M. Griffith, was born on October 15, 1915 in Slatington, PA to Freida Seifert Griffith and Thomas Griffith of Slatington, PA. Tom died Monday, August 31, 2009. He is preceded in death by his wife Ruth May Bourquin Griffith of Camden, NJ.
Tom is survived by his sisters, Marguerite Cooper of Palmyra, NJ and Freda McFadden of Marlton, NJ; daughter, Susan R. Clayton and her husband Clint Clayton of Greenville, NC; son, Gary T. Griffith and his wife Lydia N. Griffith of Monroe, LA; grandsons, Mike G. Griffith of Monroe, LA and David W. Griffith and his wife Alison R. Griffith; great grandson, David Alexander Griffith of Stonewall, LA.
When WWII started, Tom enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served in the 36th Troop Carrier Squadron 316th Troop Carrier Group as an Aerial Engineer (2750). Tom married Ruth May Bourquin near Fort Benning, GA, where he was stationed before leaving for Europe. Tom was in the campaigns in Africa, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Allied invasion over Central Europe, Northern France, invasion of Normandy (D-Day) and Rhineland. He was a Sergeant and Honorable Discharged September 3, 1945. After the war, Tom went to work for Beaunit Mills in Trenton, NJ. He worked for Beaunit for over twenty-five years until transferring to NC.
Mr. Griffith moved his family from Charlotte, NC to Monroe in 1970 to start Ouachita Industries, a new double knit textile plant. This was a new business to Monroe at the time. Tom spent his entire career in the Textile business.
Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.
