Visitation for Mr. V. Gerald Dean, 68, of Monroe, will be at 1:00 PM Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at Kilbourne Hall at Grace Episcopal Church in Monroe, with funeral services following at 2:00 PM in Grace Church. The Rev’d Canon Gregg Riley will be officiating. Mr. Dean will be interred in the Columbarium in the church.

Born January 2, 1941, in Monroe, LA, Mr. Dean passed away on September 20, 2009. He graduated from Neville High School in 1958, attended Georgia Tech and NLU, and graduated from LSU for both his undergraduate and law school degrees. After serving active duty in the U.S. Navy from 1962-66, he later retired from the U.S. Naval Reserves after attaining the rank of Lieutenant.

Mr. Dean was President of Masur-Dean Properties in Monroe and served for many years As Counsel with local law firm Shotwell, Brown & Sperry. He was proud of his past service on the Board of Directors of Ouachita National Bank and later Banc One in Monroe (now JP Morgan Chase).

Mr. Dean was committed to community service in the Twin Cities. As his father had, he served as President of the Monroe Kiwanis Club. Through his service with the Kiwanis Club, his sons, Benjamin and Michael, and he volunteered on Christmas morning delivering Meals on Wheels for over 25 years. As Chairman of the Monroe Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Dean helped to establish the task force which later became the Ouachita Economic Development Corporation. He was a past member of the Executive Council of the local Ouachita Valley Council (now Louisiana Purchase Council) of the Boy Scouts of America; was a past member of the Board of Directors of public radio station KEDM; and was a proud member of the Masur Museum, the Lotus Club and the Strauss Playhouse.

A long-time member of Grace Church in Monroe, Mr. Dean served two terms as Senior Warden on the church’s Vestry, was a member of the church’s choir and Men’s Club, and participated in several Church Rector Search Committees.

Mr. Dean is preceded in death by his parents, W.L. and Joyce Dean of Monroe, and his brother and sister, Roger Dean and Shirley Dean.

Survivors include his wife, Gretchen Masur Dean of Monroe; his two children: Benjamin M. Dean & wife, Kim of Washington, DC and Michael Dean of Washington, DC; his brother: Dr. Kent Dean of Shreveport, LA; his niece: Laurie Dean of Allen, TX; his granddaughter: Hadley Joyce Dean of Washington, DC; and six other nieces and nephews.
