Graveside services celebrating the life of Mrs. Avis Jean Windham Hower of Winnsboro, LA will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, October 5, 2024, in the Myrtle Memorial Cemetery in Winnsboro, LA with Rev. Craig Beeman officiating. Visitation will be held from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Friday, October 4, 2024, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home Winnsboro, LA.
Avis was born on June 22, 1930, in Jena, LA and passed away on September 29, 2024, at her home in Winnsboro, LA. Upon graduating from Northwestern State University, she was hired as the first Librarian in Franklin Parish sight unseen. She remained at the library until she retired. She loved her job, especially when she was on the bookmobile. She enjoyed her book club and remained active in Delta Kappa Gamma. Avis was a member of the First Baptist Church, where she was also a faithful member of her Sunday School Class.
Avis is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Gilbert Hower; son, Thomas Gilbert Hower, Jr.; and her parents, Hugh and Alma Windham of Jena, LA.
Survivors include her nephews, Cedric Windham of Clarksville, TN, Kennon Daniel and wife, Jancie of Columbia, LA, James Caldwell and wife, Libby of Bowie, MD, Nelson Hower of Durham, NC, and John Hower and wife, Linda of Lebanon, PA; nieces, Mary Hower of Gainsville, GA, and Virginia Wall of West Monroe, LA; niece-in-law, Sabra Caldwell Comish and husband, Byron of Denham Springs, LA; great nephews, Justin Windham and wife, Wanda and Ryan Windham and wife, Jona all of Clarksville, TN.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Winnsboro, LA.
