Funeral services celebrating the life of Daniel Lee Dotter, 74, of Ruston, Louisiana, will be held at 11:00 A.M., August 3rd, 2026, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home of West Monroe. Interment to follow immediately after at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service.

Dr. Daniel Lee Dotter, 74, passed away peacefully on the morning of July 25, 2026, at St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe, Louisiana. Born in Ohio on March 31, 1952, Dan lived a life marked by scholarship, curiosity, and a profound appreciation for both the discipline of academia and the artistry of music.

A devoted educator, Dan, spent the majority of his professional career at Grambling State University, serving as a graduate professor in the Criminal Justice Department. He approached teaching with a seriousness of purpose and a genuine desire to elevate his students, challenging them to think critically and ethically about the world around them. His academic path began at Mississippi State University and continued at Virginia Tech, institutions that shaped his intellectual foundation and fueled a lifelong commitment to research and writing. His published work often centered on deviant behavior, the rock-and-roll lifestyle, and the creative genius of Pete Townshend reflected his rare ability to merge rigorous scholarship with cultural insight.

Music was not merely an interest for Dan; it was a defining force. In his youth, he was an avid drummer, and throughout his life he remained a passionate admirer of The Who, Bob Dylan, and The Eagles. He found in music a lens through which to understand society, identity, and the human experience. Dan was known for his love of spirited discourse, and he delighted in conversations that explored philosophy, social justice, the unchecked state of college football, and the complexities of academic life. His mind was sharp, his humor dry, and his presence unmistakably thoughtful.

Despite facing significant health challenges over many years, Dan continued to greet each day with resilience, wit, and a desire to connect. His later years were enriched by the compassion of caregivers and friends, including his godson, Dewayne Jackson, and neighbors, Jeff Williams and Mary Morgan, whose kindness and companionship brought comfort and dignity to his daily life.

Dan was preceded in death by his father, Richard James Dotter; his mother, Chardelle Hamilton Dotter; and his brother, John Thomas “Tom” Dotter. Also, by his beloved dogs, Pongo and Mandy.

He is survived by his son, Joshua Dotter (Victoria); his siblings, David Dotter (Judy), Carole Weaks, and Dick Dotter (Nikki); and a wide circle of colleagues, former students, and friends who will remember him with deep respect and affection.

Dr. Daniel Dotter leaves behind a legacy defined by intellect, integrity, and an unwavering dedication to understanding the world whether through scholarship, conversation, and music. He will live on through his words, ideas, and the lives he impacted.
