After graduation from Waelder High School in 1945, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and assigned to the 38th Regimental Combat Team, an elite winter and mountain warfare unit. Edward designed the NLU Indian symbol, a replica of which was installed on the wall of the Student Union, and the NLU seal used extensively until replaced by the current ULM seal. Additionally, his artwork has been exhibited locally, regionally, and nationally.

After retirement he traveled throughout the United States and Canada. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed watching sports and especially attending his grandkids games and competition.

In 1952, Edward married Martin Westover of LaPorte, Texas. They were married 56 years before her passing in 2008. Their union resulted in one son, Steven, and two daughters, Kathi and Kristi.
