Funeral services for Dr. Janice McCarthy Phillips, PHD, of Monroe, Louisiana, will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, October 20, 2023, at Grace Episcopal Church with The Rev. Don Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Riverview Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Rd. Monroe. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. in Kilbourne Hall at Grace Episcopal Church.
Dr. Phillips is survived by her niece, Kathleen McCarthy Thompson and her husband Buddy Thompson of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; her nephew, John C. “Mac” McCarthy and his wife Margo McCarthy of San Antonio, Texas; her godson, William Drago Durrett III of Monroe, Louisiana; and special friend, Bert Sanford Durrett of Monroe, Louisiana.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Ran Lorenzo Phillips, Jr. MD; her son, John McCarthy Phillips; her parents, John and Lucile McCarthy; and her brother, John Helm McCarthy.
A native of Rayville, Louisiana, Dr. Phillips was born on January 9, 1937, and attended Rayville Elementary School and graduated from Rayville High School. She attended LSU, earning a BA and MA degrees in speech communication, and Indiana University, earning her PHD in speech communication. At LSU, she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.
She was a loyal member of Grace Episcopal Church, serving on the vestry, as a Eucharistic minister, on St. Mary’s Altar Guild and as a member of the Daughters of the King. She was also a member of the board of directors of Grace Episcopal School.
She was the business manager for Internal Medicine Associates for many years, and was a member of the 20th Century Book Club, Bayou DeSiard Country Club and the Lotus Club.
Pallbearers will be Keith Breaux, Ryan Sartor III, William Durrett III, Paul Ziesel, John Fox, and Stephen Harrison.
Dr. Phillip’s family appreciates the care given to Dr. Phillips during her illness by Lena Berry, Autria (Trey) Burton, Tiffany Minor and Sabrina Smith, by Alex McElwee, Debra Carey and Vicki Davis with Compassus Hospice, and by her physician, Dr. Gregory Green and his staff.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Grace Episcopal Church, 405 Glenmar Ave., Monroe, Louisiana 71201.
