Memorial services for Dr. Sidney Alexander Seegers will be held at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Monroe, LA on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at 3:00 pm with Reverend Gene Bryson officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 1:30 pm until time of the service. Private family burial will be in the Columbia Hill Cemetery.

Sidney was born in New Orleans on June 20, 1929, to parents Georgine Flanders and Rev. Sidney Alexander Seegers, Sr. He passed away on August 6, 2026, in Monroe. Because his father served as a Methodist minister in Louisiana, he attended schools in Rayne, Lake Providence, DeRidder, and Shreveport. After graduating from Columbia (LA) High School, he attended Louisiana Tech University and graduated with degrees in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics. As a member of the Boy Scouts of America, he earned the Eagle Scout award (42 merit badges) as well as the Order of the Arrow. Post Graduate degrees included master’s degree from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University and Ed. D from the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

His professional career began as a Neville High School (Monroe, LA) mathematics and chemistry teacher and Guidance Counselor. He served as the first principal of Neville Junior High School (formerly Northside/Lee Junior High) and was appointed as the Principal of Neville High School at the young age of 29 years. Other services in the Monroe City School System included Curriculum Coordinator, Assistant Superintendent of Finance, and Superintendent. Post-retirement, he was Headmaster of River Oaks School. In 2024, he was honored with the naming of the new multipurpose building at Neville High School as the Sidney A. Seegers Multipurpose Center.

In addition to his professional career, he served as President of the Louisiana Teachers Association, the Louisiana School Superintendents Association, The Louisiana Retired Teachers Association, and the North Louisiana Retired School Superintendents Association. His work in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools included leadership on the Pension Round Table of the National Retired Teachers Association. His service to his community included leadership in the Monroe Rotary Club. During his 68-year membership, he served as President of the Monroe Club as well as District 6190 Governor. He was a Paul Harris Fellow and a Rotary Foundation Benefactor and was awarded the Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service, the Rotary Foundation Distinguished Service Award, and the Rotary Foundation Service Above Self Award, which is the highest honor bestowed upon a Rotarian. The Monroe Rotary Club’s Service Above Self Award for graduating high school seniors is named after him.

Other community involvement included leadership in The Red Cross, United Way, Boy Scouts of America, YMCA, Girl Scouts of America, Ouachita Economic Development, Monroe Symphony Orchestra, Monroe Symphony League and NAFA (Neville Alumni and Friends Association).

As a 73- year member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, he served as Chairman of the Administrative Board, Chairman of the Staff Parish committee, and was a member of the Methodist Men.

Preceding him in death were his parents and his sister Dr. Winifred Seegers.

He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Carolyn Lee Seegers; three children, Emily Seegers Rash (Bob), Dr. Robert Lee Seegers (Nell), and Douglas Alexander Seegers (Gloria); and six grandchildren, Ronald Stewart Shelby (Rachel), William Seegers Shelby (Megan), Dr. Scott Andrew Shelby (Brienne), Lauren Seegers Erwin (Will) all of Monroe, LA, Katie Seegers Roth (Chip) of New Orleans and Robert Lee Seegers, Jr. (Blair) of Gulfport, MS. Other survivors are two sisters, Kathryn Seegers Hutchinson and Dorothy Seegers Williams; and great grandchildren, Amanda Caroline Shelby, Mason Alexander Shelby, Ryleigh Mae Shelby, Abigail Elizabeth Shelby, Anna Florence Roth, Madison Eileen Shelby, Davis Stewart Shelby, Alexander Camors Roth, Reagan Elizabeth Erwin, Charles Seegers Roth, and William Joseph Erwin, IV. Step grandchildren are Trey Moore, Laura Richardson, and Bougher Moore.

Honorary Pallbearers will be his grandsons and great grandsons.
