Frederick Boyd King, age 87, of Calhoun, Louisiana, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on July 17, 2025. Fred was the son of the late Boyd and Margaret Adelaide Shield King. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Shirley Pitts King; children, Thomas Edgar King and Frederick Mark King and wife Susan; grandchildren, Heather Ryan and husband Matthew, Andrew King, Alexander King, Kathleen King, and Kimberly Reyna and husband Dominic; great grandchildren, Lucas Ryan, Crystal Reya, and Elliot Ryan; sister, Candice King along with several nieces and nephews.
Fred was born on February 21, 1938, in Flushing, Queens, New York City, he spent his early childhood in Teaneck, New Jersey before moving to Cherry Hill Farm in Calvert, Maryland. Shortly thereafter, his family relocated to Prince Frederick, MD in 1950, when Fred was 12.
While living in Prince Frederick, Fred demonstrated a strong aptitude for International Morse Code, earning his amateur radio license in 1955. He graduated from Calvert County High School in June 1957, then attended Tri-State College in Angola, Indiana, where he received a degree in Electrical Engineering. Following college, Fred enlisted in the United States Air Force and worked on radio towers. While stationed in Louisiana, he met the love of his life, Shirley Pitts. They married on June 6, 1962.
After his service, Fred embarked on a new chapter in Baton Rouge, Louisiana working for Dow Chemical and Georgia-Pacific. His thirst for knowledge led him back to school, enrolling at Louisiana State University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree, graduating Cum Laude. He later earned his Juris Doctor in 1978.
In 1982, Fred settled in the West Monroe area, where he quickly became a cornerstone of the community. He was a founding member of the Northeast Louisiana Soccer Association and a dedicated member of the Rotary Club, where he was awarded the prestigious “Paul Harris Fellow” honor. In 1994, he joined the Civil Air Patrol, becoming a pilot and flying drug enforcement missions. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and served as chief legal officer for his detachment.
In 1984, Fred began his legal career serving in the District Attorney's office, where he developed a strong foundation in criminal law and public service. Afterward, he transitioned to private practice, spending many years at one of Monroe’s most respected law firms, earning a reputation for integrity and dedication to his clients. In 2000, Fred took a bold step forward by establishing Frederick B. King, L.L.C, embracing entrepreneurship and continuing his commitment to justice through independent practice. His dedication and expertise earned him distinguished appointments to serve as an attorney and counselor before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in 1989 and, most notably, the United States Supreme Court in 2017.
Beyond the courtroom, Fred remained devoted to his faith throughout his life, actively participating in his church community and lending his time and spirit in service. He was a member of the All Saints Anglican Church in Monroe. He also served as a Representative for the Northeast Region of the Boy Scouts of America, dedicating many years to mentoring young people, fostering leadership, and exemplifying the principles of service and integrity. He was a long time and passionate supporter of the Strauss Theatre in Monroe; Fred uplifted the performing arts in his community with unwavering enthusiasm and encouragement.
Fred’s greatest joy came from the deep connections he nurtured with family and the community he cherished. His legacy lives on in the relationships he built, the lives he touched, and the love he shared. His love was constant, often unspoken, but deeply felt by all who knew him. It lived in the steady presence he offered.
Memorial service for Mr. Frederick Boyd King, will be held at 10:30 Sunday, July 27, 2025, at the All Saints Anglican Church in Monroe with Rev. Terry Gatwood officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00AM until service time Sunday, July 27, 2025, at the church under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Rd. Monroe.
