Gail Stewart Thompson, a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and accomplished florist, died peacefully on June 7, 2025, in Monroe, LA. Gail was born on Dec. 3rd, 1927, in Corpus Christi and was the first child of Pat and Maurice Stewart. The family moved to West Monroe within a year and that is where Gail spent her childhood years. Gail graduated from Neville High School and went on to Agnes Scott and transferred to LSU in Baton Rouge where she met the first love of her life, Thomas Dozier Fortenberry. Gail and Tommye were married for 13 years before he passed. Gail and Tommye had 3 children, Dean, Ross and Lea. Shortly after Tommye’s death in 1963, Gail fell in love again with Levins Thompson. Levins had lost his wife, Edwina from an illness. Lev had 2 boys, Grady and Mike. Gail and Levins were married in January 1964 and merged the 2 families. They had baby Clint, in 1966 to complete the Thompson family with 6 children.
Gail was a florist in Monroe for over 5 decades. She helped and mentored others to learn about plants and flowers. If she was not doing something for the family or friends, she was in her garden with her flowers. Gail also loved to cook and cook for a big crowd. There was always something really tasty on her stove. Her philosophy was the more people at her house the merrier it was.
Gail was affiliated with Kappa Kappa Gamma, The Monroe Garden Club and the Monroe Junior League as well as First Methodist Church.
Gail was so proud of her 6 children, 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Family brought her much joy and happiness.
Mrs. Thompson is preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Levins Thompson; sister, Martha Stewart Hibbard; son, Grady Thompson; and grandson, Sean Thompson.
Survivors include her four sons, Dean Thompson, Ross Thompson (Cathi), Michael “Mike” Thompson (Bessie), and Clint Thompson (Douglas); and her daughter, Lea Holubec (Paul); and daughter-in-law, Jo Thompson (Grady’s wife).
Gail’s grandchildren include Becky Pilkington, Erin Giblin, Amanda Dedman, Levins Thompson, Sarah Nerren, Colette Tilt, Lindsey Holubec, Thomas Holubec and Eleanor Thompson.
The family would like to thank all of the staff at Georgia Tucker for their love, attention and care for Gail. More importantly, we want to thank Brenda Williams, her care giver of over 4 years, for her tireless devotion to Mom. Gail called Brenda “her best friend.” If we all could be so fortunate to have a best friend like Brenda, life would be easier. They family would also like to thank Louisiana Hospice and Palliative Care for all of their attention and care for Mrs. Thompson.
Any memorial contributions can be made to the Friends of Black Bayou, or to First Methodist Church in Monroe, LA.
