George Dean McGrew

Funeral services celebrating the life of George Dean McGrew, 88, of West Monroe, Louisiana, will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with Rev. Chad Ballard and Dr. Woods Watson officiating. Interment will follow immediately after at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, West Monroe. Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service.

George “Dean” McGrew was born on July 12, 1936 and went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 30, 2024. 

Dean is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Rosemary Williamson McGrew; sister, Betty Kvaternik; daughters, Cynthia McGrew and Jennifer McGrew Stilwell and husband, Byron Stilwell, all from West Monroe Louisiana. Dean is additionally survived by his grandson, Heath Griffin of Silsbee Texas; and great grandsons, Gabriel Dean Griffin of Rosenberg Texas, and Kaiden Griffin of Bastrop Louisiana; along with his many cousins, nieces and nephews. 

Dean is preceded in death by his mother and father, Gladys and E.D. “Son” McGrew; and his sisters, Mary Lou Rutledge and Ida Faye Sims, who are all celebrating their reunion in Heaven with him now.

Dean was a life-long resident of the West Monroe community. He was proud to say he was a “Ward Niner” in his early days of life. Dean was a career employee of the Paper Mill in West Monroe and retired from his career there after 43 years of service. During his lifetime he was an active member and Deacon for many years at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. Dean was also an active sportsman and outdoorsman. He loved hunting and fishing with his family and friends. Dean had a special passion for coaching the Twin City Sports girls softball team from 1976 to 1981. He coached “his girls” to many victories locally and nationally and spoke of those times often. When you couldn’t find Dean at home with his family, or at church, or at the ball field, or in the deer stand, or in the fishing boat, or at the paper mill, you could probably find him in one of his most comfortable places in life – on the seat of his John Deere mower. He was proud of his yard and his flowers. And he kept them well cared for. As you may be able to tell, Dean managed to pack 200 years of life into the 88 years God gave him with us!

Beyond his love for Jesus, Dean loved his wife Rosemary and his whole family fiercely. And his family and friends loved him too. Our family would like to extend our sincere and heartfelt thanks to the loving and caring staff of Georgia Tucker and Elara Hospice for their loving care for Dean in his final months of life. We would also like to extend our love and tremendous thanks to Ms. Joy Martin who devoted so much of her time to being with and caring for Dean and Rosemary during his life. Our family will never forget all of you for all you have done for Dean, and truly for our entire family.

Pall Bearers for Dean will be his nephews, Terry Sims, Lance Sims, Wayne Rutledge, Caleb Rutledge, and great grandsons, Gabriel Dean Griffin and Kaiden Griffin.
