Harry Blair
Miller
Nov 16, 1928 — Jun 16, 2026
Harry Blair Miller, Jr., a much-loved educator, went to his eternal heavenly home on June 16, 2026. Harry was born on November 16, 1928, in West Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, to his loving parents, Harry Blair Miller and Iola Maple Miller.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 66 years, Shirley Mae Opfer Miller; his beloved sisters, Lola, Norma, and Laverne, along with their spouses; and his nephew, John Hall.
His life will be forever celebrated by those left behind to cherish his memory. He is survived by his three children, Harry Miller (MaryAnne), Holly Tolar (Larry), and Scott Miller (Shannon); his grandchildren, Justin Myers (Brittany), Blair Miller (Lauren), Jenna Myers, Branden Miller, Cody Miller (Alyssa), and Caitlyn Luttrell (Bryan); and his great-grandchildren, Adelyn Miller, Nolan Myers, and Lilah Mae Myers. He also leaves behind a special brother-in-law, George Opfer; his nephew, Guy Reschenthaler (Jan); his niece, Gale Stawiery (Dick); and a host of loving friends.
Harry lived his life full of love, compassion, and generosity. He especially showed these traits to his children and cherished grandchildren. He could not have a conversation with someone without beaming with pride, letting them know he felt he was the most blessed man to have all "winners" as grandchildren. Harry proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War and could still recite his rifle number after all these years. His passion for education began at the University of Pittsburgh. He went on to earn several degrees in education in Pennsylvania, including his doctorate.
During his career in education, he wore many hats, serving as a teacher, principal, and college professor. He taught at State Teachers College, California, Pennsylvania before moving his family to Memphis in 1968, where he taught at Memphis State University until 1976. In 1976, he moved to Monroe, Louisiana, where he taught at Northeast Louisiana University (NLU) until his retirement. Harry and Shirley moved back to Memphis in 2001, where he worked with the State of Tennessee on school improvement plans.
After Shirley's passing, he and his beloved dog, Barkley, returned to Louisiana, where he lived out his remaining years. If you knew Harry, you were probably the recipient of one of his pranks or jokes. His quick wit and humor were among the many traits that made him so lovable, alongside his strong sense of loyalty and loving nature. He will be greatly missed.
The family extends a special thanks to all the friends and family who took the time to talk or chat with him. Deep gratitude is also extended to the caring nurses and staff of the West Monroe Guest House, as well as Elara Caring Hospice, for their love and support. Harry held a special place in his heart for children and animals. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to your local animal shelter. A celebration of life ceremony will be announced at a later date
