Coach Hubert Hughie Parker was born in Monroe, LA on March 19, 1945, and earned his wings September 10, 2025 in West Monroe, LA .
A Celebration of life will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, September 13, 2025, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church with Mother Rita Jefferson officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:00 P.M. until service time. Interment will follow in the columbarium at St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
Hughie attended OPHS, where he played football and graduated in 1964. After high school, he attended Northeast Louisiana State College, now known as ULM, where he also played football. He then went semi-pro in the late 60’s playing for the Twin City Panther’s.
At St. Frederick High School, he was the head Jr. High football coach for twenty years, and now he is being inducted into the St. Frederick Hall of Fame, which would have made him so, so proud and happy! There isn’t a player or a parent who didn’t love him and appreciate his sweet nature. He always felt that everyone should play, no matter what their level of playing was. He would always say they can’t learn if they don’t get to play. He also coached his three kids in baseball and softball. He would tell Mindy and the girls that they didn’t come out there to be pretty but to play ball.
Before retirement, he worked for Consolidated Freightways and dedicated twenty-nine years of service to them.
Hughie loved the Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Penn State football and watched them faithfully on TV each Saturday and Sunday. He went to many Packer and Dodger games with his sons, Chad and Brad, where they made many fond memories. He started playing golf when he was fifty years old, which turned into his new hobby. He loved going to Colorado to visit his daughter, Mindy, and he would walk the trails and dance. He was quite the dancer and would dance anywhere he could, including retail stores and any public place that was playing music. His love for music was evident and he loved singing those old country songs.
He was the last living founding member of University Church of Christ, where he was the greeter and usher every Sunday, helping every little lady out of their cars and ushering them safely inside. He was a member until their final service on August 28, 2022. He then became a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, where he continued his “job” as a greeter. At St. Thomas, he found a niche, with welcoming and loving priests and members, who all loved Hughie immensely.
Hughie was the kindest, sweetest and most loving man anyone could ever meet. He had the best hugs and loved to share them. If he talked to you on the phone, he always ended the conversation with “I love you”.
Hughie is preceded in death by his parents, Hubert Huddleston and Thelma Byers Parker.
Hughie is survived by his wife of over forty years, Marana Buttitta Parker; daughter, Mindy McCall; sons, Chad Parker and wife, Jackie and Brad Parker and wife, Leah; grandchildren, Hayden, Luke, Sydnee, Avery, and Brayden; great granddaughter, Lucy; sisters-in-law, Sara Williams, Gina Walker and husband, Lyn; brother-in-law, John Buttitta and wife, Helen, as well as his “brother by another mother”, Archie Bradshaw; as well as a host of nieces and nephews, whom he loved dearly. He has special place in his heart for his great niece, Emri, whom he referred to as “my little girl”.
A special thanks goes out to Lisa Hughes and her staff at Stoneybrook Senior Care, where he spent the last eleven months of his life. He loved his “Rascals” and they loved him dearly as well.
There will never be another man like Hughie. We were all fortunate to have him in our lives. He will never be forgotten. We will love him forever and ever.
