Funeral services celebrating the life of Mr. Huey P. Wheelis, 97, of West Monroe, LA will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, June 22, 2025, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home West Monroe, LA with Eric Hotard of the Apostolic Restoration Church Officiating. Interment will follow in the Hasley Cemetery.
Mr. Wheelis, a World War II veteran, was born on November 20, 1927, in Eros, LA, and passed away on June 18, 2025, in West Monroe, LA. Huey found joy in sharing stories of his youth, growing up on the farm. When he was 14 years old, he and his friend Edward Salsbury, age 15, cut logs for Bill Greer for 7 cents. They each got 3 ½ cents. Then Huey helped his Daddy pull corn, chop cotton, and do anything else that needed to be done on a farm. In his spare time, he checked on cows that were running loose. He heard their cowbells and rode the mule when hunting for the cows. At age 16, he graduated high school in Chatham, then moved to West Monroe where he started driving a truck. On February 28, 1946, at age 19, Huey joined the Army, serving in the 7011th Area Service Unit Ceremonial Detachment at Arlington Cemetery during World War II. After an Honorable Discharge from the Army at the conclusion of WWII, he drove a dump truck until he started Iron Working. In 1982, he was injured on the job. After healing, he did Iron Fabricating for 8 years. Later he drove vehicles for car dealerships and drove a delivery truck from West Monroe to Tennessee for M & M Mars which manufactured boxes. During his lifetime, Huey enjoyed gardening and sharing the fruits of his labor with family and friends. He especially enjoyed deer hunting with his son, grandsons, and great grandchildren. A trip of a lifetime on October 17-19, 2019, was the Brookshire’s and Super I Heroes Flight to Washington, DC, with his brother Bobby, a Korean War Vet. Huey had the opportunity to return to Arlington Cemetery where he served during WWII.
