James Daniel Bryant, age 86, passed away peacefully in Hockley, Texas on Thursday, September 4, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
James was born in Haynesville, Louisiana on August 16, 1939. He is preceded in death by his parents, Gerald Earl and Evelyn Katherine Bryant and sister, Margaret B. Roberts.
James grew up in Monroe, LA and graduated from Ouachita Parish High School (Class 57) and was a faithful follower of Christ, a loyal husband, a devoted father, proud grandfather to four, a great grandfather to eleven, and great-great grandfather to one. He was one of the good ones and known for his kind spirit which was rooted in his love for God. He could always be heard whistling and storytelling about the “good times”, and he was never prouder than when he was talking about his loving grandchildren, great grandchildren and his great-great-grandson who were the light of his life.
James is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Barbra Bryant; his beloved sister, Geraldine Bryant; his children, Karen Bryant Mastin and husband, Darrell, Shellie R. Bryant, and James Randall “Randy” Bryant and wife, Denise; grandchildren, Megan Dutton (John Paul), Katherine Norton (James), John Bryant (Courtney), David Bryant; great-great grandson, Waylon Xayne and a host of other relatives and friends.
James was a proud and a dedicated 32nd Degree Master Mason and member of the Freemasons for over 60 years. He belonged to the Grand Lodge of Texas with his home lodge in Katy, Texas at Masonic #1439. He also served in Louisiana (early years) and was active at the following lodges in Texas: Gregory #998, Rockport #323, Ingleside #1361, Tranquility #2000, Sweet Home #576, and Portland #1411.
James was very proud to receive his Sam Houston Full Member Award (2011), 50 Year Service Award (2012), Golden Trowel Grand Lodge Award and his 60 Year Service Award (2022). He also served in many roles including Secretary, Junior Warden Senior Warden, Worshipful Master, Secretary, Pro Tem, Chaplain, Master of Ceremonies, Marshal, Senior Deacon, Treasurer, President MWSA (Dist.#37B), Worthy Patron (#479) and many more community driven events. He was also a volunteer Shriner Driver for the Shriners Hospital in Galveston, Texas for many years providing free transportation services for families.
A committal service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, September 12, 2025, in the Mulhearn Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel, 623 Hwy 80E, Monroe, LA. A celebration of his life will be held in Rockport, Texas at the First Baptist Church of Rockport at a later date.
