Jimmye Doss Smith entered the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 29, 2025, at the age of ninety-nine. She was born on January 4, 1926, in Houston, Mississippi. Her family members and caregivers called her “Gigi.”
After earning a degree in music from Belhaven College in 1948, she married her husband of sixty-five years, James William Smith, Jr. In 1966, she moved to Monroe, Louisiana, when he joined the faculty of what was then Northeast Louisiana State College.
She is survived by her three children, James William (Bill) Smith III and wife Ruth, Anne Smith Kennedy and husband Elton, and Robert Cleve (Bob) Smith and wife Jeannie. Her granddaughters are Joy Smith Witherow, Jessie Smith McKamie and husband Will, Meryl Kennedy Farr and husband Peyton, and Jessica Kay Smith. Her great-grandchildren are Elizabeth Faith McKamie, Elton Joe Farr, Kennedy Anne Farr, and Byrdie Rose Farr.
For the past decade, she resided at The Columns of Bastrop assisted living, where she had loving care from the devoted staff. While at the Columns, she was blessed with personal help and friendship from Clara Ford and Kathy Matthews, and faithful pastoral care and encouragement from Rev. and Mrs. Jason Strong.
When asked when she accepted Christ as Savior, she responded in her gentle Mississippi accent, “Why, I have never been without Him.”
She will be remembered as a Southern Lady whose deep faith in God filled her life with gratitude, contentment, joy, and sweet kindness.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at Mulhearn Funeral Home, 2308 Sterlington Rd., Monroe, LA 71203.
