Joy James McElroy passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, August 27, 2023. Joy was born on August 5, 1931, to Bess Black and Hardy M. James. She graduated from her beloved Neville High School and attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri and Hinds Jr. College in Raymond, Mississippi. She graduated from BMI business school in Monroe, Louisiana.
On December 22, 1949, she eloped and married the love of her life, William Murry McElroy, Jr. (Bucky). They were married for 61 years until Bucky's death in 2012.
Joy was an active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, especially the United Methodist Women. She was also active in Chapter AK of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, serving as President. Joy was also a sustaining member of the Junior League of Monroe. In 2007 Joy was awarded Alumni of the Year from Neville High School.
Joy was preceded in death by her husband, Bucky, and son, Paul M. McElroy, and her sister Jackie Peake.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan M. Weaver; grandchildren, Robin W. Reynolds, Jeffrey M. Weaver (Erin), Samantha A. McElroy, and Ellen A. McElroy; great grandchildren, Jake McElroy Weaver and Hudson Arthur Weaver; nieces Diane Hendrickson (Les), Mary Wright (Mike); nephews Randy Biegenwald, and Bill Biegenwald.
The family would like to thank Fred and Melanie Kalil for their loving friendship and John and Gail Bass for kindnesses too long to list. Charlies Angels for Hire, LLC, Teresa Ogumnuyiwa, Amanda Vidos, Katherine Dixon, Jameisha Williams, Deerika Lewis and Makeisha Fair for their loving care and kindness in these last years. Dr. Dean Stockstill and Elara Hospice.
A memorial service for Joy James McElroy of Monroe, LA, will be held at 12:00 Noon Saturday, September 2, 2023, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Monroe, LA, with Rev. R.B. Moore officiating. Visitation will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday, September 2, 2023, until service time at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul's UMC, 1901 Lexington Ave., Monroe, LA 71201 or Neville Alumni & Friends Association, 600 Forsythe Ave., Monroe, LA 71201.
