Obituary

Judy Voncille Underwood Rodriguez Duty, age 81, of Swartz, Louisiana, passed away peacefully in her home on December 18, 2025. She was born on December 14, 1944, in Holly Ridge, Louisiana.

Judy was a devoted member of Gateway Assembly of God in Sterlington, Louisiana. To know Judy was to love her. Though she gave birth to four children, she was a mother to many more. Her laughter and radiant smile were unmistakable—joyful, warm, and unforgettable.

Family was at the center of Judy’s life. She loved deeply and proudly, and she was always willing to listen, support, and help others in any way she could. She enjoyed tending to her flowers and garden when she was able, and she found great joy in reading and listening to music of all kinds. An excellent cook, Judy never wanted much for herself—only for her family to be happy and safe. Her good humor shone through often, especially when she was teased about having the name “Judy Duty,” which brought her to laughter every time.

Judy was preceded in death by her husbands, Henry Rodriguez and Larry J. Duty; her parents, J.V. Underwood and Pauline Aaron Underwood Slaughter; her stepfather, Cecil B. Slaughter; and her son, Michael Henry Rodriguez.

She is survived by her son, James Vernon Rodriguez and his wife Sonya; her daughters, Voncille Nolan and her husband Bill, and Nichole Lopez and her husband Ben; and her sister, Mary J. Hyde, her son Mark and wife Beverly. Judy’s legacy lives on through her grandchildren: Jamie, Lacie, Ashlie, Kelsie, Michael Jr., Brooklyn and her husband Derek, Benjamin, Sebastian, and Michael Shane; as well as seven great-grandchildren, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.

Due to a recent loss within the family, a memorial service to honor Judy’s life will be held at a later date. Family and friends will be notified when arrangements are made.

In lieu of flowers, Judy wished for contributions to be made to one’s church or a charity of choice, or simply for others to perform an act of kindness in her memory.
