Obituary

Martha Sue Sugden Hendrix, a beacon of warmth and love, was born July 9, 1937, and passed away peacefully on January 29, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was 88 years old.

A celebration of Martha Hendrix’s life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, February 7, 2026, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Rd., Monroe, LA, with Mr. Jay Copeland officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until service time at the funeral home.

Martha was born in Monroe, Louisiana, to the union of John William Sugden and Lillie Mae Sugden.

Martha spent her life nurturing her family, defining herself not just by her roles, but by her profound capacity for kindness and her infectious smile and laugh.

Martha was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She found immense joy in gardening and keeping her yard beautiful. The hummingbirds must have known how sweet she was because they flocked by the hundreds to her feeders. She was famous to her family for her southern cornbread dressing, and no one could make it better.

Martha had an incredible ability to listen, and her home was a haven of love, and her heart was open to all.

Martha is survived by her loving children: James Michael Hendrix (Pam), Steven Scott Hendrix (Molly) and Sharon Rene Hendrix (Susie); her adored grandchildren: Brittney Hendrix Evans (Dillon), Timothy “T.J.” Hendrix (Sarah) and Peyton Hendrix (Lauren); her adored great grandchildren: Colten, Mary Grace, Aubrey James, Mack and Camille; and her loving pets: Sweetie, Sophie and Little Bit.

Martha was preceded in death by her loving husband, James Woodie Hendrix; her father, John Willliam Sugden; mother, Lillie Mae Sugden; brother, Paul Sugden; sisters, Frances McFarland, JV Gillette and Lillian Wade; and grandson, James Holden Hendrix.

The pallbearers will be Mike Hendrix, Stevie Hendrix, T.J. Hendrix, Peyton Hendrix, Dillon Evans and Colten Evans.

Martha, “Mamma” or “Mammaw”, taught us to be strong, kind and to always believe in ourselves. Her love is the guide we will carry with us forever.

In lieu of flowers, she would like donations to be made to one of the following charities that were close to her heart: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Wounded Warriors or Tunnels to Towers.

The family would like to thank Heart of Hospice of Monroe and Azalea Assisted Living for their special care.
