Brian Mercer officiating, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Rd., Monroe. Visitation will be held from 12:30 P.M. until service time at the church.
Mary Flippo Spooner, lovingly known as Flip, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2025, at the age of 83. A proud Texan at heart, she was the daughter of Richard and Phyllis Flippo. Flip graduated from Arlington Heights High School in Fort Worth and attended the University of Oklahoma and the University of Southern Mississippi. In 1961, she married her beloved husband, Frank Spooner, and together they built a life full of love, moving between Hattiesburg, Shreveport, and Monroe as Frank pursued his oil field career.
Flip’s talents as an organizer and her flair in the kitchen were legendary among her family and friends. She dedicated 25 years as the wedding director for First Methodist Church in Monroe, where she also sang in the Chancel Choir for 40 years, played in the bell choir, and nurtured the church’s youth music program. She volunteered every Tuesday at St. Vincent’s de Paul Community Pharmacy and served as the State Parliamentarian for the Louisiana Federation of Republican Women.
She was a proud member of the BB Chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and deeply valued the laughter and friendship of her bridge club - whether or not much bridge was actually played.
Flip’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her husband, Frank, and their three daughters, Shannon Holloway, Chelsea Haskew (Chris), and Catherine Bradley. She also leaves behind her loving sister, Judy Gathings, eight adoring grandchildren—Harrison, Christian, and Mary Grace Holloway; Francie Haynes Stidham (Wiley); Haley Haskew Dorris (Mitchell); Luke Haskew; and Will and Claire Bradley—as well as two precious great-grandchildren, Jude and Haven Doris.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Suzanne, and niece, Mary Elizabeth Gathings.
The family would like to thank Flip’s care givers from St. Francis Medical Center, Charlie’s Angels for Hire and Premier Hospice for their wonderful care.
Flip’s generous spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her. Her favorite organizations were the First Methodist Church Monroe’s Chancel Choir, and St. Vincent de Paul Community Pharmacy in Monroe. Flip will be deeply missed, but her legacy of kindness, warmth, and service will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
