Funeral services celebrating the life of Mrs. Maureen Knight Hancock, 86, of Monroe, LA will be held at Noon 12 PM Saturday, January 27, 2024, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home in Monroe, LA with Deacon Scott Brandle officiating. Interment will follow in St. Matthew Catholic Cemetery in Monroe, LA. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until service time on Saturday.
Maureen was born February 3, 1937, in Greenville, MS, and passed away January 20, 2024, at the Gardens of Georgia Tucker in Monroe, LA after a brief illness.
She was the oldest child of J.C and Ruby Knight and big sister to three brothers, Jim, Joe, and Ron. She spent her early childhood in Belzoni, MS and spent a lot of time with her grandmother and “sisters” Mary Ellen, Elsie Ruth, and Frances. She moved with her family to Monroe prior to her junior year, and she graduated from Neville High School in 1954. She married Fred Hancock, the love of her life, shortly after graduation. She was a dedicated wife and mother, whether it be at home or helping with the family businesses.
In her free time, she was an active participant in Colonial Dames and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also a member of the First Families of Mississippi. Maureen enjoyed studying Geneology and tracing family histories across the globe. She found joy playing weekly Bridge games with dear friends. Maureen and Fred also met some of their lifelong friends through the Jana Street Trash Bunch, where they shared many laughs and memories. She enjoyed knitting and sewing, and even passed this skill along to her granddaughters, Anne Marie and Elizabeth.
Maureen, better known as “G-maw”, was especially proud of her granddaughters and enjoyed supporting them at school programs, sporting events, and Saturday mass at Jesus the Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Her great-granddaughter, and little “peanut” Penelope brightened the last years of her life through their in-depth conversations. Whether it be retelling family stories, Penelope’s favorite TV topic of the day, or future plans of fun times to come, their conversations could go on and on.
Mrs. Hancock is preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Fred L. Hancock Jr.; three children, Fred L. Hancock, III, Mauri Anne Hancock, and Kenneth James Hancock; granddaughter, Jess Anna Hancock; and her parents, J.C. Knight and Ruby Knight.
Survivors include: Granddaughters, Anne Marie Hancock (Isaac) and Elizabeth Hancock; Great Granddaughter, Penelope Douget; Daughter-in-law, Jan Hancock; three brothers, Jim Knight (Nancy), Joe Knight (Renae), and Ron Knight; Sister-in-law, Marie Adele Bond; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Phillip Knight, David Minninger, Joey Carter, Isaac Douget, Ivan Hendricks, and Pete Minninger.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mauri Anne Hancock Nursing Scholarship Fund at University of Louisiana at Monroe, LA
The family would like to extend special thanks to The Gardens at Georgia Tucker for their love, compassion, and care for Mrs. Hancock.
