Obituary

Murray Hays Greer, Jr. was born on April 7, 1947, in Minden, Louisiana and passed away on October 24, 2026, in Monroe, LA. Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 31 at Mulhearn’s Funeral Home on Highway 165, Monroe, LA. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel at Mulhearn’s Funeral Home with Reverend Johnny Wilkins officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery south of Arcadia, Louisiana at 2:30 P.M.

Murray was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Sarah Jane Harrison Greer; his parents, Murray Hays Greer and Myrtle Suggs Greer; and his son-in-law, Jason Philip Deal. He is survived by sons, Michael Murray Greer (Meredith) and Daniel Harrison Greer (Lillian); and daughter, Anna Lisa Greer Deal; grandchildren, John William Greer (Loren), Murray Hays Greer III (Rebecca), Michael Talbot Greer, Jackson Harrison Greer, Jacob Robert Deal, Sarah Jane Deal and Mary Loftin Greer; great-grandson, Wesley James Greer; and bonus grandchildren, David Barnes, Jr. (Brookley), and Brigitte Barnes Trego (Austin). He is also survived by his brother, William Jesse Greer (Cookie) and their children and grandchildren.

Murray graduated as valedictorian from Athens High School in 1965. During his senior year, he was all-state in basketball and was named Mr. Athens High School, among other honors. He graduated from Louisiana Tech University in 1969 earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with a major in Accounting. Murray had married Jane, his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, in 1967. Upon graduating, he went to work for Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. (now KPMG), a certified public accounting firm.

Murray completed the exam to become a Certified Public Accountant in 1971 and worked in both public accounting and industry through the years. He was a member of the American Institute of CPAs and the Louisiana Society of CPAs. He retired from CenturyTel, now Lumen, as Vice President and Controller.

After retirement, Murray enjoyed working in his yard on the banks of beautiful Lake Bruin and hunting during hunting season. He took a late interest in woodworking, and over the last few years, he created several projects for the enjoyment of his children, grandchildren and great-grandson. He and Jane especially treasured the time they spent with each of their grandchildren. They enjoyed attending a soccer or football game and watching their granddaughters cheer on the sidelines. Sharing these moments with their family brought them both great joy. Murray continued supporting his grandchildren at their events after Jane’s passing, knowing she was cheering on from above.

Murray was an active church member through the years and served in positions on church boards and in financial and accounting capacities for his churches. He and Jane both served several years as youth counselors at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Monroe. Most recently, he served for many years as Chairman of the Finance Committee at Newellton Union Church.

Pallbearers will be Hays Greer, Michael Talbot Greer, Jackson Greer, Jake Deal, Dr. David Barnes, Jr., Austin Trego, Kent Owens, and Bob Prestridge. Honorary pallbearers are Will Greer, Gerry Riser, Sonny Kifer, and Dr. David Barnes.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oak Grove Cemetery Association at 1223 Highway 815 Simsboro, LA 71275, or Newellton Union Church at P.O. Box 265 Newellton, LA 71357.
