Sherry was born on July 1, 1949, in Monroe, Louisiana and passed away on February 7, 2026, in West Monroe, Louisiana.
Sherry lived a life filled with purpose, creativity, and devotion to the people she loved. After a long and meaningful career at WMHS, she retired from teaching Algebra II and Geometry subjects she made approachable through patience, humor, and a genuine desire to see her students succeed. Beyond the classroom, she poured her heart into school spirit, sponsoring the Rebel JV Cheerleaders and proudly leading them to a second-place finish at Nationals. She also sponsored the Rebel Raiders, designing a signature piece of their uniform that remained a tradition for more than thirty years.
Sherry’s talents stretched far beyond academics. She loved drawing, and watching sports like tennis and football, and embracing the joyful chaos of holiday cooking with her kids. Traveling with family and friends brought her immense happiness, filling her life with memories she treasured.
A faithful member of First West Baptist Church, Sherry was part of the SewHappy Ladies, where she helped create masks, dresses, and backpacks for underprivileged children. These were quiet acts of service that reflected her generous heart.
Sherry will be remembered for her creativity, her dedication, and the way she made every space brighter simply by being in it. Her legacy lives on in her family, her students, and all those blessed by her kindness.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Marie Shelton.
Those left to honor and cherish her memory are her son, Chris Brownell and wife, Karen; daughter, Jamie Brownell; former husband, Jim Brownell; former son-in-law, Dustin Ratcliff; grandchildren, Averi Brownell, Dean Brownell, and Eli Ratcliff; brother, Tom Shelton, Jr. and wife, Debra; sister, Carol Twyman and husband, Richard; nieces and nephews, Dennis Lemoine, Dana Zuber, Amber Plumber, Walker Twyman, Ashley Twyman, Murray Twyman, Guy Twyman, and Elise Twyman, great niece, Aria Jade; along with a host of loved ones and friends.
