Memorial services for Suellen Mercer Drewett, 81, of West Monroe, Louisiana, will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, August 25, 2023, at First Methodist Church in West Monroe, Louisiana, with Rev. Jon Tellifero officiating. Visitation will be held from 12:00 P.M. until the time of service.
Mrs. Drewett was born on September 5, 1941, and passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 11, 2023.
Suellen was born in Fort Knox, Kentucky to Col. Frank and Genevieve Mercer. As a self-proclaimed “Air Force brat”, Sue and her family relocated all over the United States and even into Newfoundland, Canada. She graduated high school from the Julius T. Wright School for Girls in Mobile, Alabama. She went on to continue her education at Auburn University. It was there she met the love of her life, Clyde Patrick Drewett. The couple were set up on a blind date to the Marine Corps Ball and quickly fell for one another. Pat and Sue were married in San Antonio, Texas, honeymooned in New Orleans, and began their life as a couple with “only a quarter in their pocket.”
The pair were blessed with two children while Sue continued to live the “Air Force brat” lifestyle during the Vietnam War where Pat was serving. After her husband’s retirement from the Marine Corps, they made Louisiana their permanent home. Suellen remained a devoted stay at home mom until her children graduated from high school. Thereafter, Sue began working as a welfare worker for the state continuing her desire to serve others. After her retirement, the couple moved to West Monroe to become full-time grandparents. They became active members of the First Methodist Church joining the choir and the Ed Stinson Sunday School class. Sue and Pat spent their free time volunteering for numerous organizations, traveling, dancing, playing bridge, and challenging one another at cribbage.
Family and friends remember Sue for her ability to have fun and to create an atmosphere of warmth and hospitality. Her wit and quick intuition also made her an excellent bridge player. She participated in the Cultura Book Club Mon Amie Newcomers Club, and numerous bridge and domino groups until the day of her passing.
Suellen is survived by her children, Patti Wilhite (Brent Vidrine) and C.P. Drewett (Elizabeth); grandchildren, Langdon Drewett, Hope Wilhite, Heather Wilhite, and Reagan Drewett; siblings, Pete Mercer (Chotsy), Carol Frisbree (Walt), Dan Mercer (Cathi), and Mike Mercer (Pat); sister-in-law, Vicki Buckhalter (John). A host of cousins, nieces, and nephews that she adored.
