It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Susan Black Gardner of Monroe, LA. Visitation will be held Monday, November 24, 2025, from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at Mulhearn Funeral Home on Sterlington Road in Monroe. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at 2:00 P.M. at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church with Fr. Peter Mallya and Deacon Bill Goss officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home.
Susan was called to the Lord Friday, November 21, 2025.
Mrs. Gardner was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas “Tommy” Gardner Jr.; her parents, Nola and Theron Black; her sister, Dianne Hummel; her brother, Raymond Black; and her brother-in-law, Mike Bishop.
She is survived by her daughter, Robyn Johnson (Jimi); her sister, Carol Bishop; her grandchildren, Kolby Crew (Cassie), Hunter Varino, and Jordan Johnson (Kenzli); her great-grandchildren, Audrey, Carson, Carter, Jaxon and Hazen; and her nieces and nephews, Kim Kennedy (Todd), Hollye Rogers (Dave), Cathy Bishop, Mike Bishop Jr. (Laura), Chad Bishop (Jamie), and Brandi Linton.
Susan graduated from West Monroe High school and worked for Malone & Hyde as well as the City of Monroe before retiring to spend her days as “Nana”.
Though retired, Nana was kept busy running her grandkids to and from school functions, ball practice and doctor visits. When she wasn’t shuffling grandkids, Nana spent her time working in the garden or meticulously cleaning her house. There was never an occasion when her home was not spotless, always ready to welcome whoever may come through the door.
Susan loved God, her family, and her friends with her whole heart. She will be missed dearly, but we rejoice in her being welcomed into heaven by those that preceded her, and we find peace knowing Nana and Pawpaw are sitting on Heaven’s back porch drinking coffee watching their family grow every day.
Pallbearers will include Kolby Crew, Jordan Johnson, Clint Dickens, Dave Rogers, Luke Barras, and Clay LeBeff.
Memorials may be made to The Wellspring.
“Cardinals may appear when loved ones are near.”
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for the prayers, love, and support shown during this time. Your kindness brings comfort as we celebrate Susan's beautiful life and the joy she brought to all who knew her.
