Ursula Wallmeier Frey Toney
Mrs. Ursula Wallmeier Frey Toney was a resident of Madison Parish for most of her life. She was born on February 23, 1941, in Baskin, LA and passed away on May 16, 2025, in Delhi, LA.
After journeying from Germany to the U.S. in 1959, Ursula became a notable personality eventually landing in northeast Louisiana. Her natural brass and catchy demeanor enlightened the atmosphere of travel centers in Madison and Richland Parishes as Highway 80 fully gave way to I-20 in the late 60’s and early 70’s. In the blink of an eye her children had grown up amidst challenging years riddled with economic and social constraints common to the people of the area. Notwithstanding her status as an immigrant, a divorcee, and an all-around hoot, she managed to achieve a station in life as Big Nanny in 1977. Soon thereafter, the blessings kept multiplying when she found her forever home with Walton Monroe Toney of Baskin and married him in 1981. Together with a second grandchild in 1984 (and many precious more in the years afterwards) they established one of the family’s long-lived institutions: Oma & Opa. As the years stretched on, the family grew, and the Christmas party became a clown car tradition. Everyone packed themselves and gifts into a small home in Tendal to enjoy their soggy, boggy holidays in true Louisianan style. They had presents, gag gifts, tacky lights, gold and silver decorations, toys, games, laughter, giggles, jokes, cokes & tea, snacks, candies, cakes, and a whole lot of plain little moments that made their world go ‘round just one more time. As life rolled by, Ursula’s retirement into senior life came with a victory over cancer in the late 2000’s but then a heartbreaking loss in 2014 when her beloved Walton passed from this life. Devotedly, her loving daughter Audrey and cherished son-in-law, Kenneth, invited her to live with them in Kilbourne where she was solidly planted by 2016.In the years that followed, Oma and her precious pet friend, Fräulein, watched more and more little ones scampering about. Always teasing and always nagging, she made an impression on them like she did with most folk. With the passing of time, it seemed to speed faster and faster, and it was disheartening to barely heal from one blow before the cosmos landed another one. In just six short years, Audrey moved to a fairer place in heaven in 2022 and Oma’s most quiet time of life would begin. With great care, her family called, visited, celebrated birthdays, shared holidays and remembered the not so jolly days. They all bore the reality of blissful twilight until only the purest, distilled sentiments remained. In the end, it was the stories, music, videos, books, photographs, memories and even regrets from a bygone century that filled every shared moment. It’s crystal clear that it was a needle’s chance in a haystack that this woman from half a world away was here to begin them all.
